Water Mist Systems
Water mist systems are installed in areas that require efficient use of available water. These systems are a relatively new technological development which result in the reduction of the required pump tanks and pipe cross-sections.
The design parameters and system calculations are described in detail in the European Standard ELOT ΕΝ 14972.01_2021. Wet mist systems can operate at low pressure (up to 12 bar) or high pressure (up to 120 bar).
❖ In low-pressure wet mist systems, all network components (pipes, connectors, pumps) are similar to those of sprinkler systems. The difference lies in the design of the sprinkler, which has a smaller K factor and a specially designed deflector which utilizes the pressure and network supply to create very small diameter droplets.
❖ In high-pressure wet mist systems, a specific study and design needs to be carried out by the company supplying the equipment. The latter should include stainless steel pipes and positive displacement pumps. The nozzles are specially designed and result in even greater water efficiency (compared to low-pressure systems) and faster fire suppression.
