Passive Fire Protection
By passive fire protection we mean the set of precautionary measures provided for
- The timely and safe escape of the public from the building - prevention of collapse in case of an incident and
- Avoiding the transmission of fire to other areas or other buildings
and includes:
- Architectural and construction design
- Escape routes - Number of emergency exits.
- Restriction of fire spread
- Other requirements
According to Presidential Decree 71/88, all buildings need study and the application of Passive Fire Protection means is mandatory.
In the case of timely and safe escape of the public are used:
- Security light
- Marking of escape routes
To prevent the spread of fire to other areas or other buildings are used:
- Characterization of dangerous areas
- Fire compartments consisting of load-bearing structures and fire barriers or opening frames.
➤ Fire compartments
The construction of a fire compartment aims to prevent the transmission of fire to a neighboring area. To achieve the desired result we can use the following materials.
- Fire-resistant building materials such as fire-resistant plasterboard or cement board, fire-resistant panels, fire-resistant iron structures and others.
- Fireproof frames such as
- Fireproof metal doors (single-leaf and double-leaf).
- Fireproof glass doors (single-leaf and double-leaf).
- Security doors - fire safety (single-leaf and double-leaf).
- Fireproof shutters.Fireproof curtains.
- Fire dumpersFireproof wood.
- Fireproof sliding metal doors.
- Fireproof guillotines.
- Fireproof frames of other types of special design. - Fire barriers such as
- Fireproof foam
- Fireproof silicone
- Fireproof putty
- Fireproof collars (especially for pipes)
- Fireproof pillows
- Fireproof plates - Fire-resistant paints and special impregnation fluids as appropriate (wood, metal, etc.).
➤ Fire Resistance Index
The fire resistance index is defined as the time it will take for the fire to penetrate the window or building material that separates the fire compartment from the rest of the space or building. Usually the fire resistance time is set at 30-60-90-120-180 minutes.
The fire resistance of a building element or structure according to EN 13501/2 is classified by one of the following codes: R, RE, E, EI or REI followed by a limit in minutes, such as 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, 120, 180, 240 or 360. The letters R, E and I indicate that this item is valid for the time given in the numerical part of the designation with respect to:
- Ability to pick up static load (R).
Fire resistance of a structural element is its ability not to collapse or exceed certain deformation limits, when charged with a predetermined load, it is exposed to the effect of fire. Because the load is chosen by the manufacturer, it is possible that two products with the same alphanumeric designation have been certified for two different mechanical loads, which should be mentioned on the test certificate.
- Structural integrity (E).
Integrity against the fire of a structural element is its ability to prevent the passage of flames and hot exhaust gases on its unexposed side, in case of fire from one side.
