Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Fire Suppression System
Every automatic fire suppression system consists of a fire suppression part and a detection part. Pursuant to Fire-fighting provision 15/2014, which entered into force on 01-03-2015, fire suppression with CO2 must be designed in accordance with NFPA 12 and the detection part must be designed and certified in accordance with ELOT ΕΝ 54.
The fire suppression part consists of:
➤ CO2 STORAGE CYLINDERS (TANKS)
CO2 will be stored in liquid form in the appropriate cylinders or array of cylinders pursuant to the calculations. The cylinders shall be cylindrical and suitable for wall mounting or placement on the floor and shall be heavy duty (pressure test 250 bar) to withstand the pressure of CΟ2 at the maximum expected temperature during use. The cylinders will be filled with CO2 with a filling density of 0.67 kg/lt, while the nominal pressure inside the cylinders will be 850 PSI (58.6 bars) at 21oC. Each cylinder will be labelled in accordance with international standards, stating the quantity of the CO2 content and the system’s working pressure.
Every CO2 cylinder shall be equipped with the following instruments or components:
- CO2 filling valve both for the initial filling and for supplementing during the six-monthly inspections of the installation provided there is a CO2loss in excess of 5%. This loss will be determined by cylinder weighing.
- A hose to connect the cylinder with the CO2piping network and non-return valve (only when there is an array of 2 or more cylinders).
- Appropriately-sized release valve.
- Pressure relief valve.
- Electric and manual actuators (one for each cylinder or array or cylinders) with the necessary piping connections for successive pneumatic actuation of cylinders in an array.
If there is a cylinder array, a manifold made of seamless galvanised steel manifold shall be provided, with a number of intakes equal to the cylinders in the array. The array shall be actuated by the pilot cylinder. The cylinder size and working pressure is determined by the size of the array.
➤ CO2 DISCHARGE NOZZLES
The CO2 discharge nozzles shall be made of aluminium or brass and shall be suitable for the intended use and working pressure.
