Access control systems

Access Control Systems are used to control the access of persons and/or vehicles in a protected area.

Let’s take a closer look at the architecture of Access Control Systems. The access gate is equipped with an electric lock that receives electrical signals from the control panel. In turn, the control panel receives signals from card readers, when a holder swipes their card on the card reader. If the number and information that are stored in the card match a pre-set scenario, the control panel sends the appropriate signal to the electric lock, the gate opens and access is granted. On the other hand, if the information does not match, access is not granted. The same procedure may also apply when exiting. The term Card when referring to Access Control Systems means every component that is able to store information which is electronically transmitted when the component is swiped on the card reader. This component is available in the form of a plastic card (magnetic, Wiegand, smart card with a microchip), or a keyring, etc. For Access Control Systems to provide more security, they can receive biometrics that can be used independently, or in combination with the cards for access control. Finger or palm print and iris or voice recognition, are well known and approved biometric technologies that are used for access control. The decision to grant or block access is based on information stored in the Control Panel of the Access Control System. Lastly, Access Control Systems require the continuous connection between the control panel and a PC, which is used for programming, reporting, etc. The reports can be printed for further use.

Access Control Systems come under the umbrella of security systems. For more information on security systems, please select:
